Hills surrounding Berega

There are many beautiful views surrounding Berega.

Berega Village
There are a number of small family run shops selling a limited selection of basic commodities.
Locally grown produce on sale daily. The quantity and quality is entirely dependent on rain at the right time.
Orphanage
Shade and safety are found in the grounds of the orphanage.
The orphanage kitchen.
Village Houses
Typical housing in the village. Some of the houses have corrugated iron (known as barti) roofs.
Hand made clay bricks are often used.
Collecting water from the well. There are several around the village but many of them are broken with no funds to repair them.
Lay Training Centre (LTC)
At the Lay Training Centre there is a class room, meeting room and accommodation for students (shown in the 3 pictures)
St Mary’s Church
The Church is the people. Here is a typical Sunday congregation.
Kindergarten
State run primary education starts at the age of seven in Tanzania. The Kindergarten in Berega gives the opportunity for children under that age to start earlier.
There are two classrooms, a teachers office and an enclosed playground in the Kindergarten complex.
Funds for the construction of the Kindergarten where given by Merland Rise Church and a team of young people from the Church came to paint and decorate it in August 2004.

Hospital Staff Accommodation
Hospital Complex
The main gate.
The family of patients have to provide food for them during their stay. This is the cooking area.
Notice outside the Hospital.
The central courtyard in the hospital complex.
Staff Houses. These old and run down buildings are just outside the hospital and need replacing.
The Maternity Ward.
Outpatients waiting area.
Maternity Waiting Home
Specially built to house mum’s to be who have been predicted to have a difficult birth. Often women are lost in childbirth because of the time it takes to get to hospital. Being able to stay at the hospital cuts that delay out and greatly increases the chances of a successful outcome.
School of Nursing at Berega (SONAB)
Opened in 2010. The building shown contains a classroom, library and communal area.

Time to relax. A volley ball court has proved very popular.
Airstrip
The Flying Doctor is a vital link which brings specialist medical skills to this remote part of Tanzania.
