Sponsorship Opportunity at Bishop Chitemo Primary School

Bishop Chitemo Church Primary School was started in Berega in 2011: the vision was that by establishing an excellent English Medium school the staff at the hospital would be happy to continue working at the hospital, knowing that their children would have a good education and be able to progress to Secondary School when they were older.

The school has now expanded so that it now takes children from many different backgrounds in the Berega area and beyond. There are now 456 pupils of whom 308 are boarders and 148 are day pupils. The children take National Exams in their Fourth Year at school and last year they did very well. In the exams the results in the different subjects are added up to give an overall grade A,B,C,D or E. Of the 61 children at Bishop Chitemo, 46 received Grade A and 15 received Grade B. Then in their final year at the Primary School the pupils take their national exams to go to Secondary School, and at the end of last year all 59 pupils passed the exam and went on to secondary education.

Here is a short video describing the school and its pupils.

The school is fee-paying but there are children in Berega village whose parents are poor and whose children need to be sponsored if they are to be able to go to the school. So BREAD set up a Sponsorship scheme in 2017 to enable these children to go to the School, and we now have sponsorships for 38 children. We are keen to expand the scheme so that more children with promise and potential from poor families can benefit from this excellent schooling.

If you’d like to sponsor one of the chidren, or join with others in sponsoring one of them, they and we would be delighted! The fees are £254pa + Gift Aid (or £318 without Gift Aid). Please phone or email us to talk more about the scheme. (David is a BREAD Trustee.)
