Team
Gary Mann - Chairman
Gary is married with two grown up daughters, both of whom share his passion for Berega. His interest in Berega started when his Church agreed to support Noj and Mary Northway as Cross Links missionaries. In 2002 he lead the first of three short term trips taking young people from 16 to 20 years of age to work in Berega.
They worked in the hospital, refurbishing the children’s ward, had the Kindergarten and a house for a hospital worker built, which they then decorated, as well as running many children’s clubs.
During those times he made many good friends in the village and developed a real passion to see the valuable work of improving peoples lives and well-being there continue.
Gary became Chairman of BREAD in 2009.
David Curnock
David Curnock worked as a paediatrician with a special interest in neonatal care in Nottingham and now has an emeritus appointment. He is married to Anne who worked in hospice nursing and then in school nursing, and since retirement in 2006 they have been doing short-term work abroad with International Teams, which is an evangelical interdenominational mission agency.
Each year they spend five weeks working with a team who are based in Stara Zagora (Bulgaria), and who do outreach ministry with Roma families, and two months in Tanzania at Berega. David works in the hospital doing teaching and encouragement on the children’s ward and with care of the newborn, and Anne teaches English in the local primary schools and the Church school, and organises two Children’s Bible Holiday clubs, one in the village and at the other at one of the daughter churches. They both teach English in to the Bible students in the Lay Training Centre.
They have six grandchildren and love having grandparent time during the nine months in the UK!
Mike Mytton - Secretary
Mike became a Trustee in 2011, is the secretary and was treasurer until 2020. He is a retired economist / management consultant with quite a bit of experience of working in Asia and Africa.
He has got to know many people in the village and he says: “For me, one of the ‘big ideas’ in the Bible is about teamwork. So, I like the idea that, though they live so differently to how I live, they are my brothers and sisters: trying to follow the same God and with very similar concerns and ambitions. The combination of unity and difference makes for an exciting sort of friendship!”
Robert Cleave - Treasurer
Robert is a retired IT manager who worked for an international healthcare company for over 40 years. He spent several years as a Trustee of their £5bn pension fund. He is a member of St Michael’s church, Bramcote and has been active throughout the diocese of Southwell and Nottingham as a member of PCC, Diocesan Synod, Bishop’s Council and as Deanery Lay chair.
He has recently returned from cycling 18,500 miles, solo, around the world, visiting 29 countries over 18 months. He is the East Midlands Charity Awards Volunteer of the Year. He is married to Christine, a retired teacher and they have two children and four grandchildren. Nearly 40 years ago he was one of the first Traidcraft Fairtraders, work now continued through their church by Christine.
He is the new Treasurer of BREAD and very much looks forward to being involved with the valuable work carried out by BREAD and getting to know the people of Berega better.
